From the President
I am honoured to have been elected as the Association’s President for 2018.
The main objective of the Association is to provide opportunities to members of affiliated clubs to play bowls outside their normal club environment. This is achieved by the Association organising a wide range of competitions during the season, as well as friendly and inter-Association matches. Whilst the former were well supported during 2017, the latter were not – and, for a variety of reasons, we only managed to play 4 of the 9 planned fixtures
This situation was discussed at the Association’s Annual General Meeting, linked to a motion that we should henceforth scrap friendly and inter-Association fixtures. Affiliated clubs rejected this motion, and we are as a consequence putting together a programme of matches for the 2018 season, as well as making organisational changes which we hope will make the matches easier to support.
My earnest hope is that, having supported continuation of the fixtures at the AGM, all affiliated clubs will positively promote and support the Association’s activities and encourage their members to put their names forward to play in our matches. It is interesting to note that we have 24 affiliated clubs in the Association, so mathematically, if each provided one player for our matches, we could regularly put out a team of 6 rinks!
The Association has an experienced and committed team of officers, and I anticipate that they will continue to support me in the coming year. The Association has been fully mixed for well over a year, and I hope that the participation levels of lady members will continue to grow across all our competitions and matches.
It is traditional that the President chooses a charity to support during their year of in office, in the expectation that funds will be raised through Association activities to support their on-going work. My chosen charity for 2018 is the North London Hospice, which provides hospice care to patients with life-limiting illnesses at centres in Finchley and Enfield. I know that you will want to support this excellent and local organisation through the year.
